Venturi Effect

The script is approaching a "lock" for a new action filled romantic drama entitled "Venturi Effect." The project was initially announced on Facebook yesterday morning to a wide and exciting response by the local filmmaking community.

This project is a collaboration between Zaid Barrientos and Veronica Orosco who are two brilliant actors based in San Antonio. They are giving and knowledgable and a guilty pleasure to work with thus far.

I am co-writing, co-producting, and directiing this project.

Shooting dates and other information to follow on the Facebook page for the project that is as yet unpublished. We are working on filling it with all kinds of project information and goodies. I will be posting a link and stills and videos as available to this website.

This is planned to be shot exclusively in San Antonio and the surrounding area.

A big thanks to Zaid and Veronica for chosing me to be a part of this project. Homage.

48 Hour Film Project

My first time working on a 48 Hour Film Project team here in San Antonio took place August, 18, 2012. The team name was "Collective Vision (2012)" and this mockumentary short was entitled "Success."

My duties were Key Grip and served as one of the Technical Directors for the project.

Tiring but exhilirating day of work and networking and caffeine galore followed by massive sleep is the best description for my experience of this yearly ritual.

Loved it, but will be better prepared next year for the experience.

Thanks to Lucero Salinas, Director, and Stephen Guitierrez, Co-Director, and Rick Canfield, Producer, for the chance to work with "Collective Vision (2012)." Some great cast and crew members and was a pleasure to meet all.

Revolutionary Motion Control

Last year at the NAB 2011 both Kessler Crane gave the world of a peek of a motion control (moco) system that uses keyframes and bezier curves via laptop computer or other wi-fi device. I was not alone in coming away with the first reaction being to watch the video footage of it over and over again in awe, and then panting for the day I could get my hands on one of these digital based moco setups.

I've owned the analog moco system from Kessler Crane dubbed "Oracle" and have been increasingly pleased with the gear with each free upgrade. Now, Eric Kessler and his crew have changed the game adding motors that not only take electrical signals from a computer to move, but also communicate back with a main brain and controlling software to ensure high efficiency movement and accuracy. Last year it was said there would be three or four axis control which is a move up from Oracle's two axis functionality. Fusion has been perfected far beyond the three or four axis control with expandability and prowess at up to 256 axis control. Yes, you read right at 256 axis.

Future add-ons to come including a moco crane and full dolly by the end of the year. A demo of the software by Eric Kessler himself can be seen on the new Fusion site and vimeo. Price point for the Fusion technology for the indie filmmaker without having to hire on an operator for proprietary systems costing far more just to rent make the $6,000 USD starting price more than a bargain but also good budgeting strategy. Catch a glimpse of Fusion at the 2012 NAB in Las Vegas.

For Filmmakers by Filmmakers

Two cinematographers from Los Angles have designed and built a dital camera with native 2K resolution that will store RAW video with a color space of 4:4:4. It does this with an interesting configuration of SSD card within the camera and two SD cards that are user hot swappable. The camera will boast the coveted name of Digital Bolex 16 from the well known and respected compay from Switzerland that's been around since 1941 making superb film devices.

The best article, save the product's official website is to check out Philip Bloom's outstanding blog. Philp has even included a 26 minute phone interview with the two cinematographers who have accomplished this unexpected camera to sell at a price lower than a Canon 5D MKIII and higher technical specs. Quite a bit of information about the design of the camera are discussed including the fact that this is NOT a CMOS camera, and the Kodak chip that serves as the proverbial brain.

I suspect there will be quite a run for this camera if delivered at the specs and price and within timeframe given. We shall see. I'm in.

New Microphone from RODE

No need now to supply an external recording device to connect either hard wired or wireless to a microphone for onboard camcorder or DSLR acquisitions.

Thanks to the new RODE VIDEOMIC/HD microphone one has an excellent microphone and recorder all built into one unit.

This microphone is outfitted with a built in windscreen. I understand that a "dead cat" windscreen will also be available for this product.

RODE has not released a price point on this mic, but any reasonable price for skipping the extra batteries, production bag space, and more efficiency between sound input and storage device is beneficial any way you look at it.

I can't wait to add this item to my audio ditty bag.

If you want more information and notification of pricing and the like you can enter your email address and even catch a peek at this exciting new enhancement from the experts at RODE.
